Lip Balm

If you are anything like me, you have a tube or pot of lip balm in every room in the house. There is one in every coat pocket, every purse, in my night stand and in the car. I must re-apply it 25 times a day, maybe more often when the cold, dry, winter air sets in! It makes you wonder where all that lip balm goes, doesn't it? I know a lot of it ends up on my coffee cup, but in all likelihood, most of it gets ingested. In other words, I've eaten it! Yuck!

I'm looking at the ingredients of a commercial, store-bought tube of lip balm, and it is labelled "Petroleum Unflavored Lip Moisturizer". The first ingredient (which means it's the largest amount) is Petrolatum. Do we really want to ingest that? I think not! Luckily, with as few as three ingredients, lip balm is one of the easiest of the homemade lotions and potions to master.

Here is my go-to recipe, which can be colored or flavored to your own personal tastes:

Lip Balm Recipe

  • 1 part beeswax
  • 1 part cocoa butter or shea butter
  • 1 part coconut oil

Melt these 3 ingredients in a double boiler and mix them well. Remove from heat and add coloring or flavor if you like then mix well again. A few drops of peppermint essential oil is lovely when cocoa butter is used! Pour into small pots or lip gloss tubes. Cool until hardened in the refridgerator.
